Postdoctoral position available in the Physical Oceanography Tara Oceans group, (Oceanomics project, LMD, France)

 

We invite applications for a 2 year postdoctoral fellowship to discover and evaluate potential dispersal barriers across the Global Ocean. Specifically, the aim is to develop spatially explicit hypotheses regarding the location of barriers and their capacity to filter taxa.  By comparing model predictions with previous work and data collected during the TaraOceans expedition the candidate will build a more thorough understanding of the ocean’s biogeographic patterns. The successful applicants will participate in a very large, international project (TaraOceans: www.embl.de/tara-oceans/start/index.html¹) and the funded by the French Investissements d’Avenir initiative through the French National Research Agency Oceanomics Project (www.oceanomics.eu).

 

The selected candidate will work with Prof. Sabrina Speich at the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique in Paris (LMD, http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr), part of the Climate Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL, http://www.ipsl.fr) at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS, http://www.obs-mip.fr/en), which is a large structure (more than 400 faculty members and 300 PhD's and postdoctorates) that offers a very stimulating scientific environment due to the diversity and complementarity of research areas.

 

The successful candidate will use global ocean model simulations that will be analyzed with quantitative Lagrangian diagnostics and interpret the results in the context of the international and interdisciplinary TaraOcean project. The postdoc is further expected to contribute to the research of the group and the institute, and advise students.

 

Applicants should have a PhD in physical oceanography or related fields of physics or ecology. The suitable candidate will show a real motivation for interdisciplinary work. Skills in modeling and quantitative analyses are expected. Applications should include a CV with a publications list, the names and email addresses of three referees, and a statement of research interest. The latter should describe previous and current research activities, and outline the research to be pursued.

 

Initial appointment is for one year and renewable for another year, contingent upon performance. The position is based at ENS but will involve close collaborations with Drs Olivier Aumont (UPMC) in Paris, and Daniele Iudicone (SZN) in Naples (Italy) and the various involved international institutions.
